but i pulled down the shade, and i hummed a sweet tune
now death stands alone underneath the pale moon.

death came to call, in a fancy black car
he pulled up to our house with the door left ajar
but i slammed the door shut, and i locked it up tight
now death circles the block with his chauffeur all night.

death came to call, on the airwaves tonight
reporting disaster on an old black & white
but i leaped from my seat, and i switched off the screen
now death bounces from rooftop antennas unseen.

death came to call, he was right by your side
there was no place to go, you had nowhere to hide
but i kept a close watch, and held onto your hand
and death bowed & receded with his tracks in the sand.

not this time, he said, as he vanished from sight,
and it started to rain as i switched out the light.
